Reading at Southfield Park
At Southfield Park, our intent is that all children develop a life-long passion for reading, which will enable them to: access information, spark their imagination and unlock opportunities for them throughout their education and lives. We therefore ensure that quality first teaching of reading and access to engaging and ambitious texts permeates through our whole curriculum.
Our aim is that all pupils develop the competency and confidence to become fluent independent readers through highly structured and consistent reading sessions throughout the school. Additionally, opportunities for shared and independent reading are embedded into the wider curriculum thus developing children’s ability to read comprehensively across genres and text types.
Vocabulary acquisition is pivotal to accessing information and considered indicative of success in later life. Therefore the teaching of subject specific and high-level vocabulary is carefully planned, explicitly taught and regularly revisited throughout a key stage. Strategies for unpicking unfamiliar language is also explicitly modelled and taught from Reception.
Children are encouraged and supported to read for their own pleasure across a wide range of texts both at home and at school. Engaging with a variety of genres will support children to develop emotionally, broaden their cultural awareness and better understand the world around them. Reading for relaxation, escapism and to support wellbeing is regularly promoted and modelled by teachers and staff.
